General videogames

PETAKTOU MALAKA

Costas's picture

When asked by people why do I game, my usual and simple (easy) answer is because they are fun. Playing videogames however can be a turbulent ride and not always of the fun kind.

A couple of days ago, i got stuck at Super Mario Galaxy and had to repeat the same planet 3-4 times. At some point, right before another imminent death, i yelled at the TV, "PETAKTOU MALAKA!" (JUMP YOU A.......LE). I am not sure if videogames' most iconic character heard me but he still fell to his inevitable death.

Stylised Violence is a Cheap Shot

Unnecessary. Completely Unnecessary. Sorry to those of you who despise all forms of censorship, but the airport terrorist scene in Modern Warfare 2 (just after Cliffhanger) left Monty unimpressed.

Pay to Play

Ever since Microsoft made the decision of allowing the distibution of game add ons via their online service for the exchange of spacebucks (microsoft points), with all the other consoles following suit, it appears that some gamers want the new content but do not want to pay for it.

Good luck N'Gai

N’Gai Croal is leaving Newsweek (link - his last post). I don’t really know what he will be doing from now on but i really hope he stays within the videogames industry. Videogames need N’Gai’s and other serious journalists’ influence to keep maturing as a medium.

The way i play and see games has changed a lot in the last couple of years as i have tried to keep myself thinking of what i am doing and feeling during a game. It’s not just about enjoying the moments in games now but also trying to understand why. In these couple of years games journalism and critique has started to move beyond reviews. Now people with great writing and thinking skills, who are not just kids who play games for a living, have started to influence the way we see games.

It Takes Two Baby

Looking back to my first gaming memories I can envision an Atari CX2600 nestled comfortably before me in thick 70's stylied carpet. Reflected in the blank TV screen were the silhouttes of two young children each holding a paddle controller. The TV suddenly comes to life with the word PONG replacing the smiling silhouettes.
