Forbidden Planet

I was looking around for a place in London that can cater for my needs. Somewhere where I would be around people who understand me. I Googled the magic words and I was greeted with a list of suitable locations in the local vicinity of Central London, where I work. Top of the list was a place called "Forbidden Planet", what an awesome name.

I voluntarily gave up some of my electronic currency as I boarded the mobile rat cage that is the London Underground and made my way to Tottenham Court Road. From there I made the short walk to Shaftsbury Avenue, a road renowned for it theatres. Although not on stage I expected to see a colourful assortment of people when I reached my final destination.

I had never been in such an establishment before and part of me was uneasy as to what to expect but as soon as I spotted and eventually walked inside I was hit with a major dose of ecstasy.

Forbidden Planet is the UK’s largest distributor to house comic books, graphic novels, anime, manga, board games, clothing, DVDs, magazines, figurines and trading cards under one roof, i.e Otaku Heaven. Spanning over two floors I was immediately overwhelmed with just how much was on offer.

As I mentioned before I have only just taken up reading graphic novels (my first being The Boys – by Garth Ennis which I talked about here). I was now after the first trade edition of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s acclaimed series “The Preacher”.

I followed the signs downstairs and I couldn’t believe just how many comics, graphic novels and people were there. Then I realised I was just a mere minion in the world of comic books. So much to experience and discover, so little time. Some of the people there made me feel like a pompous businessman amongst the other emo nerds and geeks (I say that in an endearing way by the way).

Unfortunately the only trade that was missing from the shop was the one I was after. One of the many friendly, oily, pierced, long haired Otaku that works there was kind enough to inform me that he personally stacked the shelf with The Preacher series that very morning but they tend to sell like McMuffins in the early hours of a hung over Friday morning in the City. He told me to check back the next day as they have daily shipments (which to my pleasant surprise I did and walked away with my next adventure).

I have included a couple of snaps for your perusal, I would have taken more but I think some of the people there thought I was stalking them.
