Borefield: Bad Company

I've been playing Battlefield: Bad Company for the past week or so as it has been a game that i really wanted to try last year but missed the boat. Unfortunately, the single player campaign is extremely disappointing.

I can not get used to the controls and specifically the aiming part. It reminds me of the problems i have with FPS games on the PS3 where due to the sensitivity of the analog stick i find myself constantly making minor changes to aim properly. Bungie, Infinity Ward and so many others have shown us that this is not longer an issue on 360 FPS games.

Then it's the destructability of objects which is good and bad. Good, because you never feel safe behind a wall or inside a building. Bad, because there is no consistency. You can bomb the hell out of a building but certain parts of it simply do not get destroyed. It loses it's realistic feel and it's even more noticeable than if there was no destruction at all.

Also, what is it with this healing system? You can heal yourself with an injection which basically has a meter showing you when you can do it again. It only takes a few seconds to recharge and this means that i am constantly injecting myself. I mean all the time! It feels so ridiculous. Why not simply use a recharging health instead??

Finally, you are in a squad of 4. Actually of 1 soldier (myself) and 3 guys who are just hanging around you shouting all the time. Their AI is horrible with some Naked Gun moments where they are shooting at enemies a meter away with nothing happening. Also one of them is supposed to be the demolitions expert and carries around a rocket launcher. But he never uses it! NEVER! If there is a tank or an armoured vehicle that needs to be taken out I am supposed to go find a RPG and take it out myself.

As far as the story is concerned it is really irrelevant although i actually like the characters. But it's a pretty shallow affair overall.

It's a very boring FPS in fact. I am just going through the motions of finishing it. Learn from my mistake. Stay away!

Re: Borefield: Bad Company

The AI teammates in so many good FPS games are just decorations (MW2, FC2, H3). I did not expect this game to be an exception. The number of enemies and enemy vehicles are OK for 1 man to handle even on the hardest difficulty.

I found the controls sensitivity ideal. One can always lower it down and bring it to the MW2 default standards. I play COD games using a higher sensitivity that more or less matches the default of BC. The problems i face with the ps3 pad when playing FPS is due to the analogue sticks travel mapping, overall grip, feel and position.

I agree that the buildings are not fully destructable but there is a location patern that i realised on my first training mission and used from then on. Almost all houses contain ammo, gold bars, checkpoints, unique weapons and anti-armour equipment that you need to use in order to be able to advance with the mission. What if the game let you bring down completely the house and this action prevented you from acquiring something that sits under a pile of ruble?

You are right about the healing system but i think they chose the more realistic approach instead of the casual and it's only a 1 button immediate action, just like reload. I suggest you stay away from OF:Dragon Rising

I'm really looking forward to playing BC2 since i enjoyed the first one.

I want to get that one. I am a fan of GRAW and team based games. Although the AI, i read, is bad it's excellent with other humans.

Re: Borefield: Bad Company

I'm also a big fan of GRAW and R6:LA and i'm getting OF:DR sometime in the future.

Re: Borefield: Bad Company

Finished it today.

I have to hand it to B:BC though. Good sense of humour.

In the final vehicle section of the game and after being forced to do ALL the driving in the campaign, one your teammates says.

"I'am driving. I am a hell of a driver." and he was.....

Then after destroying the final boss and after basically doing 99.9% of the job i.e. killing. Your teammates basically say:

"You've finally started pulling your weight, new guy"

I have not changed my opinion about the game but the characters, though shallow, have won me over. Maybe i will give it another shot with Battlefield 2.
